Day 2 Relic – I already had a National Shelter Dog Month post scheduled for the 2nd so I am combing days 2 & 3. The idea for relic was inspired by the 7 cups scene from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Day 3 Miniature – When I first started taking art in 5th grade, I wouldn’t draw anything except horses. It took my art teacher a lot a work to get me to expand my horizons.
This is a horse I entered in a high school competition. My preferred mediums have always been ink, pastel & watercolors. I think as someone who has severe ADHD, I am always in a hurry and didn’t have the patience for acrylics and oils. I could occasionally be told to do something in acrylics. I have done only a handful of oil paintings over the years.
Not one of my better drawings; just a quick sketch. This year I am really going to try to make it all 31 days of Inktober. As a result, I don’t have a lot of time to devote to one sketch.
The idea for a miniature horse came from the mascots of my Alma Mater – Hardin-Simmons University. Being in west Texas, our mascot is the Cowboy. One of the most iconic traditions is the World Famous Hardin-Simmons University Cowboy Marching band. For most of its history, the band was all male. It is now co-ed.
They are known for their cross-legged Cowstep. Rumor has it the step started because they had to practice in the same field used by the 6 White Horses. The cross-over step was to miss horse droppings.
The HSU 6 White Horses used to have a miniature horse named Titan. Not sure if they still have a miniature.
The 6 White Horses started in the 1930s when Sheriff Will Watson decided to ride his horse before the band carrying the flag. Eventually, they expanded to 6 white horses and riders representing the 6 flags of Texas.
Unfortunately, due to incidents at other schools involving inappropriate flags the NCAA now restricts member schools to using only the national, state and school flags.
