What are 5 everyday things that bring you happiness?

First, spending time with The Big Guy. It doesn’t have to be anything special. Our lives are so busy that it is sometimes a juggling act just to share a meal together each day. Despite the chaotic schedules, we make it a point to sit down and eat at least one meal together every single day, and those quiet moments of connection are everything.

Of course, Leo the Redneck Poodle is second only to TBG. No matter what has happened in my day, Leo is always genuinely excited to see me. I am the undisputed leader of his pack! I love the goofy way he bounces when he is excited, or how he comes running the second he thinks I am in distress. Although, if I am being completely honest, I could probably do with a few less smacks of his paw when he decides he wants attention.

Third, a good cup of coffee and the actual time to enjoy it. I usually prefer to make my own coffee at home, either using a French press or brewing a smooth batch of cold brew. I like to keep it simple—just a little cream or some cold foam is all it takes to make it perfect.

Sunset

Fourth, sunsets in Texas. There is just something truly special about a Texas sunset, especially out in west Texas. Maybe it is the lack of trees to impede the view, or maybe it is just how vast the open country seems out there. I have seen beautiful sunsets in many different places, but absolutely nothing compares to the ones here. Then again, maybe that is just because Texas is home.

Fifth, a nice flower arrangement. I know it might sound stereotypical, but I truly enjoy receiving fresh flowers. While roses will always be my absolute favorite, I also love carnations and vibrant wildflowers—really anything with a bright splash of color. This past year, TBG got me a subscription through the floral design program at the high school where he teaches. Every month, I get a beautiful new design, and it is almost unbelievable to think those gorgeous arrangements are made entirely by high school students. Give those students an A.

Finding Happiness in the Everyday

When life gets fast-paced and overwhelming, it is so easy to start looking for happiness in major milestones or distant plans. But the truth is, real joy is usually found right in front of us. It is stitched into the quiet meals shared with the people we love, the goofy loyalty of a favorite pet, a perfectly brewed cup of coffee, the vibrant colors of a Texas sky, or a fresh bouquet of flowers on the counter. Taking the time to slow down and appreciate these five simple blessings is a beautiful reminder of how rich life truly is.
