Daily writing prompt
Describe one positive change you have made in your life.

If you have ever tried to lose weight, you know how overwhelming it can feel. Standard diet culture usually preaches strict restriction, telling you to eliminate entire food groups, count every single calorie, or follow whatever trend is currently sweeping the internet.

For me, traditional diets have never worked. Because I already live with several food allergies, my daily eating options are naturally limited. Adding another layer of strict dietary rules on top of existing medical restrictions was a recipe for burnout, frustration, and failure. Rigid plans that told me what I could or couldn’t eat simply weren’t sustainable for my life.

Instead of declaring a drastic overhaul or jumping onto another fad diet, I decided to take a completely different approach: I focused on small, manageable, everyday habit changes.

I am proud to say that, so far, I have lost 50 pounds.

I still have a long way to go on this journey, but for the first time in ages, I am making real, lasting progress. Achieving this milestone didn’t require starving myself or drinking unpalatable detox shakes. It came down to a series of sensible shifts that fit into my actual life.

  • Upgrading My Snacks – Rather than cutting out snacks entirely, I swapped out nutrient-void junk like potato chips for satisfying, protein-dense alternatives. In the process, I discovered a genuine love for pistachios, which give me the crunch I crave along with healthy fats and protein to keep me full.
  • Practicing Portion Control – Instead of banning my favorite foods, I began paying closer attention to how much of them I was actually putting on my plate. Learning what a true serving size looks like allowed me to enjoy normal meals without overeating.
  • Rethinking My Hydration – Soda used to be a major part of my daily routine, but I slowly began replacing it with better hydration habits. I started drinking significantly more water—sometimes plain, sometimes naturally infused with fresh fruit for extra flavor. My go to sugary drinks are now tea, lemonade, or another aqua fresco. Yes, I use real sugar. Due to allergies, I am not able to use the standard artificial sweeteners.
  • Keeping Room for Joy – Sustained progress requires balance. I still drink tea, and yes, I sweeten it with real sugar or mix it with lemonade. By allowing myself to enjoy the things I love in moderation, I never feel deprived or tempted to give up. I also still eat chocolate and my beloved Dr Pepper.

Losing 50 pounds hasn’t been about perfection; it’s about momentum. By focusing on tiny, consistent choices every day, I built a routine I can actually stick with for the long haul.
