The first thing that comes to mind is whatever Leo, the Redneck Poodle, happens to be barking at in this moment. He is truly a little beast. As I write this, I am still troubled by the scare he gave us earlier today.
Leo is a runner; he simply loves to run. He really loves to be chased. It is a game for him. Yesterday afternoon, he slipped out the door and led five of us on an exhausting chase. Fortunately, he eventually ran into a neighbor’s fenced yard, where we were able to retrieve him safely.
This incident was particularly frightening because of a very different story from two years ago. On that occasion, he ran onto a major road near our home. A police officer fortunately witnessed the event and activated his lights, which allowed an oncoming vehicle to slow down slightly before striking Leo. Miraculously, he survived. Though he was sore, he appeared to be in decent shape, so we kept him calm until I could take him to the vet the following morning.
By the time of his appointment, Leo was hopping quite proficiently on three legs. After a thorough examination and x-rays, the vet determined there were no breaks. He had merely suffered a strain, and we were instructed to keep him quiet and rested for several days. Having him safe and sound today is a blessing I do not take for granted.
