You may have royally messed up. Perhaps you’ve spent decades making, at best, poorly thought-out decisions—or at worst, a lifetime of abysmal choices. But here is the incredible thing about God: He is standing by, ready to welcome you home.
God is the God of the second, third, and even the 77th chance. He doesn’t just want your “good behavior”; He wants a relationship with you. If it feels like He is distant or that the signal has dropped, remember that He hasn’t moved. He hasn’t built a wall or changed His mind about you. Often, it is our own actions and shame that create the barrier. We are the ones who choose to cut the connection.
Redemption is always possible, but God is a gentleman—He will never force His will on you. He gives us the freedom to choose our own path, but He also gives us the way back. As it says in Isaiah 1:18 (ESV):
“Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow.”
The bridge is built, but the next move is yours.
- Admit the need: Acknowledge that you can’t navigate this life effectively without His help.
- Seek Him: Don’t wait for a “perfect” moment; call out to Him exactly where you are.
- Clear the path: Identify and knock down whatever pride, habit, or fear is keeping you from Him.
If you find yourself at a loss for what to do next, start here. You don’t need a complicated plan; you just need to take the first step.
- The Prayer of Honest Admission: You don’t need fancy words or a theological degree. Start by simply saying: “God, I’ve tried to do this on my own and I’ve made a mess of it. I need Your help and Your grace.”
- The Quiet Listen: Spend five minutes in silence after your prayer. Often, the “knock” we need to hear isn’t found in the noise of the world, but in the stillness of our own hearts.
- The Small Course Correction: Identify one specific choice you can make today that aligns with God’s heart rather than your old patterns. Transformation often starts with a single, small “yes.”
- Get Connected: Find a local community of Bible-based believers. The Christian life was never meant to be lived in isolation; we need the wisdom, encouragement, and support of others to stay the course.
No matter how far you feel you’ve drifted, remember that the distance back to God is only as long as a single prayer. He isn’t looking for perfection before He welcomes you; He is looking for a heart that is ready to be restored. You don’t have to have all the answers or a clean track record to begin—you just have to be willing to turn around. Today is the perfect day to stop running and start returning.
