My grandma was an amazing cook. One of my favorite things was her buttermilk cake.
- 1 C shortening
- 3 C sugar
- 6 egg yoks
- 3 C flour
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 C buttermilk with 1/2 tsp. soda
- 2 tsp lemon extract
- 6 egg whites, stiffly beaten
- Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
- Cream shortening and sugar until creamy.
- Add egg yolks one at a time.
- Add milk and flour alternately.
- Add lemon extract.
- Fold in stiffly beaten egg whites.
- Bake in a tube pan at 325 for 1 1/2 hours.
