My grandma was an amazing cook. One of my favorite things was her buttermilk cake.

  • 1 C shortening
  • 3 C sugar
  • 6 egg yoks
  • 3 C flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 C buttermilk with 1/2 tsp. soda
  • 2 tsp lemon extract
  • 6 egg whites, stiffly beaten
  1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
  2. Cream shortening and sugar until creamy.
  3. Add egg yolks one at a time.
  4. Add milk and flour alternately.
  5. Add lemon extract.
  6. Fold in stiffly beaten egg whites.
  7. Bake in a tube pan at 325 for 1 1/2 hours.
