
Texas A&M opened October 4, 1876 as the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas. it became the first public institution of higher education in Texas. The named changed in 1963 when A&M became a university. A&M was founded under the Morrill Act (land grant college). Under the Morrill Act A&M’s purpose was to “leading object shall be, without excluding other scientific and classical studies, and including military tactics, to teach such branches of learning as are related to agriculture and mechanic arts.” Today A&M is one of the largest universities in the U.S., boasts world-class research programs and is one of the largest producers of military officers behind the national service academies.
