airplaneFirst, airlines started charging for food. Next it was charging to check even one bag.  Well, Irish airlines Ryanair has come up with proposals that are even more absurd.  CEO Michael O’Leary is now suggesting that the airlines offer standing room only tickets on short flights. O’Leary has also proposed having coin operated toilets on the plane. Ok, this is just absolutely unreasonable.  Airlines should be forced to provide basic necessities including food and transporting luggage. If they aren’t able to make it on the price of a ticket have a base ticket and then allow add-ons.

  1. Standing on RyanAir may be better than having an actual seat on a cross-country bus. I could see the younger demographic such as university students and backpackers buying these standing-only seats.

    1. One difference is that buses travel 60 miles in a single hour, while planes travel 600. Basically, planes are 10 times faster. Would you rather have a standing ticket on a jet, or a sitting ticket on a bus? What would you do?

  2. Standing on a plane during takeoff and landing (not to mention during turbulence) sounds extremely unsafe, even for the passengers who paid full price for a ticket and have seats. I’d hate to have paid full price then end up with one of the standing-room passengers falling on me. For that reason, I would not fly any airline where that was permitted.

As for pay toilets on an airplane … I wouldn’t personally fly on a plane which had pay toilets, just because I think it’s insulting and would be potentially embarrassing if, for some reason, the coin mechanism jammed.

However, for super-economy travelers (like folks flying standing room only?) perhaps it would be something they’d be willing to pay. Most people don’t use the bathroom on airplanes anyway, so for those travelers it wouldn’t be an issue unless they encountered some kind of restroom-related emergency.

    1. I’m with ENM I wouldn’t even fly on that plane much less have an SRO Ticket.
Yes they can cram more on people on the plane making tickets cheaper but that poses its own problems. It reaches a point when the weight limit of a plane will be exceeded. The whole SRO tickets brings up images of pictures I’ve seen of people traveling steerage on planes.

When I fly I expect my own seat, free restrooms, at least one bag checked with no additional charge and I want at the very least a small snack. There is a reason I don’t travel on cross country buses. While I only fly 1 to 2 times a year I still want the basic necessities when flying.
