Top 10: Top Posts for 2010

Top 10It is time for my annual list of the most popular posts for the years. All posts were posted this year.  I re-posted videos for posts that features just a video.  Three of the most popular posts for the year featured videos. Another trend was that three Top 10 lists were among the most popular posts this year.

#10: Top 10: Happy 40th Sesame Street.

Today’s top 10 is in honor of Sesame Street’s 40th birthday.  As a child we would watch   Sesame Street right before watching my dad on the evening news.  Sesame Street and later School House Rock contributed greatly to my education. Today’s list is a combination of favorites and things I learned from Sesame Street. MoreHappy 40th Sesame Street

Ernest and Ronel along with others waiting to get out of Haiti are still stuck in the U.S. Embassy. Earlier today they were told my officials in the U.S. embassy it they got a flight they could leave the country.  Well, Ernest got a flight and it seems that the officials in the U.S. embassy had no intention of letting  them leave Haiti.  The staff is being difficult and  causing unnecessarily causing delays. Note: For live updates check out Ernest Parker’s Twitter.
I am re-posting this from Aaron Ivey’s blog. The Ivey’s were in the process of adopting from Haiti when the earthquake hit. Their son Amos was one of the children with Humanitarian parole who came home last Saturday on a military flight. 27 children from the Real Hope for Haiti rescue center were supposed to be on that flight, all of them except Ronel were allowed to leave. Apparently, he was missing one piece of paper. More

#10: Cars (2006) — Racing champion Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) ends up being stranded in the  tiny town of Radiator Springs and in the process tears up the town.  The town judge Doc Hudson (Paul Newman) sentences Lightning community service to repair the damages.  In the process Lightening learns some valuable lessons about life from  Sally (Bonny Hunt),  Mater (Larry the Cable Guy) and the other locals. #6: Is Extreme Makeover Home Edition.

After the Extreme Makeover Build in Gainesville, Florida I begin hearing rumors about the show that trouble me. After doing some investigation I have been able to confirm one of the rumors. It seems that some recipients of the homes have lost their home because they cannot afford the mortgage, increased taxes and/or increased utilities bills. … Read More.

#5: Holy Week 2010: Monday.

41 Every year Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem for the Passover festival. 42 When Jesus was twelve years old, they attended the festival as usual. 43 After the celebration was over, they started home to Nazareth, but Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. His parents didn’t miss him at first, 44 because they assumed he was among the other travelers. But when he didn’t show up that evening, they started looking for him among their relatives and friends. …. More

#4: Sounds of the Season 2010: Hallelujah Chorus Flash Mob Style.

Posted November 30 this one has quickly become one of the most popular posts of the year.

#3: Top 10: Signs You Might be A Nerd.

This post was inspired by a recent conversation with The Big Guy. For some unexplained reason our conversation evolved or eroded to a discussion about our favorite search engine from back in the day (late 90′s/early 2000s). Read More.

#2: Dancing in the Mine Fields by Andrew Peterson

When I post videos I like to include something about the artist or song. I think Andrew’s description of the inspiration for this song is better than anything I might write.

In December of 2009 my wife and I celebrated fifteen years of marriage. A few days later, we got in a silly argument and I wrote this song after she went to bed. Marriage, see, was God’s idea. It’s one of the most potent metaphors in all of Scripture for the way God loves us and the way we’re to let ourselves be loved by him. But that doesn’t mean it’s easy. To the contrary, it’s fraught with peril. Any good marriage involves a thousand deaths to self—the good news is, in Christ that marriage involves at least as many resurrections. We lay our lives down and enter this perilous dance with another human being who has done the same. Why should we expect to emerge unscathed? Read the original post (Link to Peterson’s website)

#1: One Minute Sermon

Tamara Lowe packs a lot in under two minutes. This was originally shared at  Christ Fellowship in Palm Beach area Florida.

Sounds of the Season 2010: Hallelujah Chorus Flash Mob Style

This one has been floating around email, Facebook and YouTube if you haven’t seen it is worth seeing.  There are several versions but this one took place at the The Welland Seaway Mall in Welland, Ontario. It was organized Alphabet Photography with help from Robert Cooper and Chorus Niagara.

TOP 10: Soundtrack for Life

top10Got tagged for another Facebook Meme. I think it was supposed to be more albums.  I decided to make it fit my Top 10 format and since it is my blog …

#10: Freedom by Michael W. Smith — In my opinion this may be Smitty’s best release. Freedom is an all instrumental project.

#9: It Isn’t Easy being Green preformed by Kermit the Frog. Ok, it was actually a single but this was one of the first albums that really influenced me. Before you get worried I was about 4 or 5.

#8: Age to Age by Amy Grant. While not her first album Age to Age was the one that set records and made her career. It was also probably her best album ever. My favorite cut is El Shaddai written by Michael card. The video is from a more recent performance.

#7: Beyond Belief by Petra. I was never really a Petra fan until this was released. Partially because “leaders” at church tried to force me to like Petra. Couldn’t  find the video of Beyond Belief did find this footage from around 1990 of He Came, He Saw, He Conquered.

dj.jpg#6: I Belong to Jesus Vols.  I & II by Dennis Jernigan. Yes, two albums but they go together. Possibly my favorite worship albums of all time. So far I have bought 3 copies (each) and given 2 away. This time I’m not parting with my copies.  Couldn’t find a good clip of this one.

#5: Jesus Freak by DC Talk.  Maybe my favorite DC Talk album. This album has a more mature feel that their previous projects.

#4: Handel’s Messiah by G. F. Handel.  The Messiah is one of the greatest works ever written.  Of course my favorite song is Hallelujah Chorus. The tradition of  standing during the performance of the Hallelujah Chorus has been attributed to King George II standing during a performance. This version is from Andrea Bocelli’s Sacred Arias.

#3: Joshua Tree by U2.  Wore at least 2 cassette versions of the project.  Found this promo reel for Joshua Tree.

#2: Third Day by Third Day. Their debut CD and the one that hooked me as a Third Day fan. They are probably my all time favorite band. Until the release of their most recent project Revelation this was my favorite. The video below is not the complete song but the best version I could find of Consuming Fire

#1: Liturgy, A Legacy, and A Ragamuffin Band by Rich Mullins. Mullins was an amazing song writter. With the release of the earlier project The World as Best I Remember vols I & II Mullins began producing deeper thought provoking music.   Creed is one of my favorite Mullins songs.

Amazing Guitar

Many years ago I discovered Dennis Agajanian’s version of Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring preformed on the guitar. It is just amazing. While trying to find a video of that I discovered this video of the Hallelujah Chorus.

This is even more impressive than the song I was looking for. I could only find a short clip of Agajanian playing Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring.

Top 10: Things About Christmas

top10

#10: It is my favorite time of the year.

#9: Snow. Ok, I may have only seen snow on Christmas twice in my life but it was fun.

#8: Special events. It is easy to get overwhelmed with too many actives this time of the year.

#7: Movies and TV specials. Somehow, it just wouldn’t seem like Christmas without A Charlie Brown Christmas and White Christmas.

#6: Christmas Decorations. Guess I am still a kid at heart but I still enjoy seeing all the lights and other decorations at Christmas.

#5: Food. It seems that some of the best treats are only served at Christmas. We have some friends that each year make a variety of homemade candy for gifts and that is always one of our favorites.

#4: Giving to others. I really enjoy finding or making that special gift for someone and I’m not much of a shopper. Personally, I prefer homemade gifts because the giver took the time to actually make something special. Guess that comes from growing up in a family that gave many homemade gifts.

#3: Music. I love music and I think the Christmas season has some of the best music. My two all time favorite songs “Hallelujah Chorus” From Handel’s Messiah and Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring are Christmas songs. I know some readers may find it surprising but I do listen to classical music. It is amazing that Handle composed The Messiah is just 21 days and it isn’t a short work.

#2: Family. Spending time with my family has always been one of my favorite parts of Christmas. When I was little my mom’s family would gather at my Granny’s (great-grandmothers) big farm house on Christmas Eve. What I remember about those times were the laughter, sitting in my Granny’s lap and being with my granddaddy. Now that we live, several states away from our family Christmas is the one time of the year that we get to see our family.

#1: “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6 (NIV) The coming of Christ is the reason for Christmas. Christ’s coming was part of God’s plan for our redemption and the greatest gift we could possibly receive.
