As I continue through our Thankful Challenge, Day 4 brings me to a reflection on my childhood memories and the incredible family that shaped who I am today. When I look back on growing up, one of the things I am most deeply thankful for is having a family that was consistently there—not just for the milestone moments, but for the quiet, everyday details as well. My family was far from perfect, but overall, they were a steadfast source of love and support.

My parents and grandparents truly believed it was their God-given responsibility to prepare me for the realities of adulthood. Because of that conviction, they worked hard to instill not only practical life skills, but also vital character traits like integrity, personal responsibility, and accountability. They didn’t just tell me how to navigate the world; they actively walked me through it, ensuring I had the foundation needed to stand strong on my own two feet.

They also believed that participating in a wide variety of experiences and activities was essential to becoming a well-rounded person. This included everything from attending local theater productions and museums to participating in a variety of activities. When I was younger, we regularly attended plays and musicals at a local playhouse because of my Dad’s job at the radio station (DJ). Naturally, we always arrived early, and we often sat right near the orchestra pit. I delighted in watching the musicians practice and perform, sometimes enjoying them even more than the actual show I was supposed to be watching!

Not every extracurricular experiment was a roaring success. I may not have enjoyed taking piano lessons back then, and I certainly wasn’t a star student, but those early musical exposures paid off later when I participated in school band and choir. One activity that truly stuck with me over a lifetime was art lessons. To this day, I still enjoy drawing and photography. I just completed the Inktober Challenge a few days ago.

Of course, my family always showed up for the usual milestones like birthdays, school programs, and art shows. But more importantly, they were right there beside me to encourage and guide me in my faith journey.

The village surrounding me included extended family as well. It wasn’t just my mom and dad who invested heavily in my life; I was blessed with grandparents, great-grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins who all played a role. I love looking back at family members like one of my uncles, who lived four to five hours away yet made it a point to drive in every August just to pay my school activity fees. As an adult, I learned that supporting me in that way was something he genuinely looked forward to each year. Even my cousins have consistently made an effort to show up for the most important events in my life and be a sounding board when I needed advice.

Having a robust, supportive family network is a priceless gift. Today, I am thanking God for the memories, the art lessons, the orchestra pits, and the generations of family members who loved me enough to show up time and time again.
