I have always liked movies. As a child going to the movies was one of my favorite treats. Now I prefer to rent or buy DVDs. Many of my favorite movies would be considered family movies. These are a few of our favorites.
One of my favorite family movies is Sound of Music. This classic stars Julie Andrews and Christopher Plumber as Captain and Maria Von Trapp. Sound of Music is the tale of the whirlwind romance between the Captain and new governess for his children. The movie is set in pre-World War II Salzburg, Austria. The movie was filmed in Austria and much of it was filmed at the Villa Von Trapp.
Another of my favorite movies is the Princess Bride. I guess technically it is a children’s movie but I love the humor. The movie is filled with quotable lines. It is a good movie to add to your collection. It is one of those movies you will want to watch over and over.
Julie Andrews also stars in two more of my favorites, The Princess Diaries I & II. Anne Hathaway plays an awkward teenager who discovers she is really a princess. When Princess Diaries first came out many critics panned it claiming that it was a waste of Andrews’s talent. To them it was a cheesy movie with little redeeming qualities. I disagree. It is a fairy tale type movie. Sure, the chances of movie really happening are slim. Hey it’s a movie not a documentary. It is a sweet, feel-good movie with a positive message.
Remember the Titians is another of my favorite movies. This Jerry Bruckheimer movie deals with school integration in Alexandria, VA. Denzel Washington plays a coach charged with merging the football teams from the black and white high schools. The movie chronicles the team’s journey from a group of hostile strangers to a championship team.
My final recommendation for family movies would be anything in the Veggie Tales series. These cartoon adventures starring Bob the Tomato and Larry the Cucumber are intended for children but the humor appeals to adults as well. Big Idea, the creator of Veggie Tales, has found a way to combine great story telling with movies that teach values. My favorite Veggie Tale is Larry Boy and the Fib from Outer Space.
Well, I could go on more about movies but I won’t. I think the popcorn is ready and the movie is about start. Hope you find one of my suggestions useful.
Enjoy the show. — DH
