When I taught art, one of the assignments I always gave during the drawing unit was to design a butterfly. It was always a fun assignment that most students enjoyed. The purpose was to allow students to experiment with colors, drawing materials, and techniques in a fun manner. I even provided outlines for students who wanted to use them. I quickly learned to make lots of extras. This is a popular exercise that students would return to when they had downtime.
