For the past several weeks I have been featuring scenes from my alma mater, Hardin-Simmons University. Located in Abilene, Texas HSU proudly embraces its western heritage. One of the iconic groups on campus is the Six White Horses. Each rider caries one of the six flags that have flown over Texas.

The Six White Horses began with a single rider in the late 1920’s. Will “Sheriff” Watson decided to ride in front of the Cowboy Band in attire similar to that of the band members. It was so well liked that a student riding unit was formed to carry the flags of Texas.

The new White Horse Center is named for Dr. W.O. “Doc” Beazley who served as director of the white horses from 1962-1998. Beazley authored a series of children’s books about the White Horses.

Wow.. thanks for that historic trip!
If you have time, come over my world here. Thanks!

Lovely post, and a delightful sight with the white horse brigade. No nice to see traditions like that grow and be kept up. I like windmills to, we have four and the Prof uses some odd selection of words when they break down or are in need of maintenance.

What breed are the white horses? My inlaws are
Both graduates of HSU and they bought a carriage ride at an alumni auction and took our twins. They loved it and got an extra special showing of the horses in addition to the carriage ride!

Not sure. When Doc was in charge he used to on trips looking for horses.
That must have been a dream for a couple of little/future “cow pokes”.
