BreakfastAccording to 101 Cookbook the newest trend for brunches is a breakfast polenta bar complete with a variety of toppings. Suggested toppings include nuts, fruit, and herbs. The author was very impressed with this new breakfast food.

It does look interesting but I do not think it is a new breakfast food. According to Dictionary.com polenta is “a thick mush of cornmeal”. Grits is coarsely ground hulled corn boiled as a breakfast dish in the southern United States. Polenta is an Italian dish similar to grits. Polenta is often cooled, formed into a log or a loaf and then served sliced and served as an alternative to bread. Anyone who has lived or been to the southern U.S. has most likely encountered a grits in various forms. Cheese grits seems to be a particular favorite. Since, I am not Texan and not a southerner I really do not appreciate grits. However, when presented with a bowl of the white mush I have found that adding salsa is an improvement.

Of course, I have never been one for trendy breakfast. Most mornings just getting something for breakfast is a great accomplishment. On occasion I have been known to fix a good breakfast spread. It is not that I am anti-breakfast but rather anti-mornings. Occasionally we eat breakfast for dinner.

  2. I believe that breakfast should include at least one of the following: breakfast burritoes, biscuits and gravy, pizza, and/or hamburgers.

I will eat almost anything for breakfast, but I do not like grits, because they are boring.

  3. I’ll stick with breakfast tacos or burritos.

The oysters don’t even sound good but since I’m allergic to shell fish I would never eat it in the first place.

    Glad you like grits.

  4. When will people learn that very few things in life are ever really new, they’re just repackaged.

I’m not a breakfast person myself, and never have been. Even the thought of breakfast gives me an unpleasant feeling.

I’m getting ready to go on my very first diet (I’ve gained about 15 pounds since the car wreck last year due to lack of exercise; I’m still well within “normal”, but I see no reason to tempt fate, time, and age). I understand I will need to start eating breakfast when I diet, which seems strange to me. I doubt I’ll be eating a trendy breakfast, though.

  5. ENM,

Try Slimfast for breakfast. Sometimes I don’t feel like eating in the morning, several years ago the doctor recommended Slimfast for those days. Yogurt is also good when I can’t eat breakfast.
