Well, it is primary season and The Big Guy says I should write about something about the presidential election again. This is my second, posting about the election (See 2008 Presidential Election).
After watching the coverage of the New Hampshire The Big Guy and I were discussing which candidate(s) I don’t want to win and the whole primary system. My comment closing comment was “If Hillary wins; I think I’ll move to Australia. Ok, it isn’t an original comment but modified from one of my favorite children’s books Alexander and Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. Alexander has one of those days where everything goes wrong. After each bad incident Alexander replies, “I think I’ll move to Australia.” In the end, Alexander learns that some days are just like that and running away or whining isn’t going to solve anything.
So, what does this have to do with the elections? Well, by voting I have a chance to give my input on our country’s leader. The candidate I want may not win and in fact really doesn’t have a chance of winning his party’s nomination. The point is by voting I get a chance to make a difference. That is one of the things I like about the process of selecting a president.
However there are several things about the election process I don’t like. The primary system really needs to be changed. A little state like New Hampshire, that is barely bigger than a county, has way to much impact on selection process. One of the best ideas I heard on a news channel was of regional primary system. Every 4 years a different region would have their primaries first. This way no state has more influence than the other states.
Another gripe I have is about the reaction of people whose candidate of choice looses. I am tired of hearing how the other candidate stole the election, is not their president, is a crook or lied. If you voted then you had a chance to give your input. If your candidate lost then get over it and don’t whine for 4 years and that includes saying impeach the current president. This is just part of the democratic process. If you are eligible to vote and didn’t you forfeited the right to complain.
For over 200 years our country has had peaceful transition of power from one administration to the next (ok except for a whiny loser who threatened to sue). We can vote for the candidate of our choice and even complain about the current administration without fear of reprisal. My point is make a difference by voting. Your favorite candidate may not win “some days are just like that”.
Well said!

Karen,
I would love to visit Australia. However, the pharse “I think I’ll move to Australia” is from my favorite chilren’s book. Alexander & the Terrible, Horible, No Good, Very Bad Day. In the book he has a bad day & every time something bad happens he repeats the phrase over & over. In the end learns that you can’t run from trouble.

Karen must have been unhappy about our recent election result here in Oz; I couldn’t be happier. 🙂

Ok, I’m not up on Australian politics. My oringial post really didn’t have anything to do with Australia but rather don’t whine about how the elections turn out. I would like to visit your country some day.
