space-diamonds.jpgScientists are using infrared telescopes to locate “space diamonds” and it seems that they are rather common. Space diamonds or nano-diamonds were first discovered in meteorites that had crashed into the Earth.

Like their earthbound cousins space diamonds are made from carbon. However, the two are very different. Space diamonds are extremely tiny, about 25,000 equal one grain of sand. Earth diamonds are formed under extreme pressure and high temperature, while space diamonds are formed in low pressure and temperatures.

  1. Space diamonds sound like they’re about the right size for WalMart jewelry, since so much of their stuff is marked “genuine diamond” but you can’t really see any of them. 😉

Seriously …. that’s very cool. It’s strange that they are formed the exact opposite way of earth diamonds. Thanks for posting this, I always love to read about science!

(BTW, for some reason my Google Reader didn’t have you listed as having any new entries, which is why I haven’t been by lately except for the entry which you brought to my attention. I’ll try to catch up tonight and tomorrow.)
