Great question. I have actually been thinking about laws that need to be changed or at least updated. Due to all of the issues surrounding the 2020 and 2024 elections. I believe our election and candidate laws require urgent updates to prevent future instability and ensure the integrity of our government.
Strengthening Candidate Qualifications
To maintain public trust, the requirements for holding office must be more stringent. Specifically, I propose the following:
- Insurrection Accountability: Any individual who participates in, instigates, or otherwise supports an insurrection attempt should be immediately and permanently disqualified from serving in any elected, appointed, or civil service position.
- Election Integrity: Any attempt to interfere with an election or its results should be grounds for immediate disqualification from all levels of public service.
- Age Limits: There should be a defined age limit for candidates, established either as a maximum age at the time of the election or a maximum age at the end of the term.
- Immediate Suspension: Elected or appointed officials documented as participating in or instigating an insurrection should face immediate suspension from office pending a full investigation. This suspension should include the withholding of pay and all associated privileges. Furthermore, such individuals should be barred from entering federal facilities without prior approval.
Impact on Voting Privileges
Beyond holding office, those who attempt to subvert the democratic process should face consequences regarding their own participation in it.
- Suspension of Voting Rights: Participating in an insurrection or interfering with an election should result in a suspension of voting privileges.
- Duration of Penalty: This penalty should range from a minimum of a four-year suspension to a maximum of permanent loss of voting rights.
- Standards for Action: These consequences should apply even if no criminal charges are filed, provided the participation or interference is documented and verified.
Implementing Congressional Term Limits
To encourage new leadership and reduce the influence of career politicians, we should establish clear term limits for Congress:
- The Senate: A maximum of two terms.
- The House of Representatives: A maximum of either two or three terms.
While these measures may not solve every challenge facing our electoral system, they directly address some of the most serious issues. Another area that needs to be addressed is limits on Presidential Powers and consequences for abuse of powers, but that is for another post.
