Well the coffee wars have officially begun. First Starbucks took over the world of trendy coffees.  Starbucks got us hooked on ventia mocha lattes and the like.  No longer would a $1 cup of black coffee do. All the cool people had to drink lattes and cappuccinos at $4 a pop.

Last year Dunkin Donuts’ specialty coffees begin to knock Starbucks from their throne as reining java king.  In my opinion they have a good iced coffee that costs far less than Starbucks.

Now McDonald’s with their McCafes has entered the fray.  For about a year or so McDonald’s has been serving flavored iced coffee that isn’t bad considering the price. Supposedly their McCafes will be priced between Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts. Their mochas aren’t bad but they aren’t that great either.

Today, I noticed that Starbucks is offering iced coffee for under $2 for a limited time. It is about half the size of Micky D’s. The coffee has a little richer taste.

Of course, my pick for best and cheapest specialties coffees is still my house. I make a pretty mean House Latte.

  1. A McDonald’s cappuccino is not inexpensive. Yet it is slightly less expensive than Starbuck’s equivalent. For example, a small McCafe costs $2.29 + tax; a tall cappuccino at Starbucks costs $2.55 + tax. McDonald’s seems to have set a price point that won’t be considered “too cheap” by the Starbucks customers its trying to lure away.

  3. Rather simple. I use espresso roast beans. Grind them. Put grounds and water in espresso machine.

For cappuccino or latte I froth the milk using the frother on the machine. For my house special. I had cinnamon, nutmeg, brown sugar, and honey to the cup and then 2 shots of espresso and milk.

  4. I drink maybe one cup of coffee a month. Usually it’s a mocha from the dispenser at the gas station for $1.29. They’re surprisingly good. Hills Brothers makes a good cappuccino mocha powder I occasionally buy.

  5. I guess I’ve gotten kind of upset with the cost of cappuccino & Iced coffee. I prefer to make my own. I have been surprised that some of the ones from gas stations are pretty good.
