“Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.”

Psalm 51:10 (NIV)

Fresh starts begin on the inside. We can clean up the outside and put on a good show, but corruption starts in our hearts and minds (Mark 7:21-23).

There is an old computer term, GIGO—Garbage In, Garbage Out. It means that if the coding or data entered is junk, the end result will be junk. True change demands intentionality. We have to fill our hearts and minds with good thoughts, healthy influences, and life-giving relationships. Focus on things that bring life, not death.

Once change begins in our hearts and minds, there will be an outward display. It does not mean you will become a preacher or suddenly be perfect. It does mean that, as a whole, your words and actions will begin to reflect a clean heart.

Just because you have things in your past or ongoing issues does not mean you are stuck. Sometimes you have to be willing to take out the garbage—change the things or relationships that are negative influences. Seek to speak life into others.

For me, focusing on God’s Word and personal worship time is key.
