Waiting for The Force Awakens
Big Guy and I are a couple of city kids adjusting to small town life in the Texas Hill country.
My first blog started in 1996 as a class project, only it wasn’t called a blog back then. Over the past 20+ years. The Dee Zone has been around in many forms. I write about music, religion, cooking, photography or whatever hits my ADHD brain at the time.
Growing up I never enjoyed writing and would do anything to get out of writing assignments in school. I have dyslexia and dysgraphia. Dysgraphia is a form of dyslexia that affects fine motors skills and the ability to write legibly. It was the actual process of transmitting ideas to paper that made writing so painful. Thanks to several elementary school teachers that ignored my learning disability and punished me for poor handwriting by the time I reached middle school I hated both school and writing.

    Yes, I did have Dr. Rainey for Greek and other classes. I’m grateful to have had him as a spiritual marker in my life.

    I had a great university experience at HPU. I was on staff at Lake Brownwood Baptist Church, the Baptist Encampment and then at Eastside Baptist in Comanche. My current church is sponsoring a church plant in Blanket at this time.

    1. Hello Dee,
      I do not know if I’m doing this right, but here it goes. This is the first time I comment on ANY blog.

      Like you, my 13 year old son has ADHD and dysgraphia, so I would like to know more about your academic experiences. How did you become such a good writer and speller?

      He is doing OK in 7th grade. He can complete reading comprehension tasks, so he gets Cs and Bs on all his core classes. He is in advanced math, and he is doing very well there, but he does all the math in his head. If he writes numbers down, he has a difficult time reading them. He is very smart in many ways, but he cannot spell well or write complete sentences.

      What made spelling and writing click for you? Do you have any information that might be helpful to him. Did you have specialized instruction? I know these learning differences are very hard on him, and his self esteem is suffering. I would appreciate any information you can share.

  12. Hey Dee, I had to check out your site…We have much in common. I homeschooled three kids for 17 years and loved it. I have taught a lot of dyslexic children to play piano. My son is dyslexic. I adore Dr. Pepper. Never had a pet cow, though. Way too big for me. LOL.

I totally resonate on handwriting struggles and nasty teachers, and similarly have been freed by the keyboard to actually discover that I love to write, now even in longhand – tho still messily…

    1. There was a special kind. The original bottling plant was still using the original equipment and cane sugar until DR Pepper forced them out of business. Oh, the original plant was in Dublin, Texas. It is Dublin Bottle Works.

    Hello my name is Elizabeth Geiger and I am a masters student in the Counseling Psychology program at Teachers College, Columbia University. I am looking for individuals who would like to participate in my research study exploring the life experiences of students diagnosed with a learning disability/disabilities.     Please excuse my direct approach.

    I’m the Development Officer at St. John’s School and College (www.st-johns.co.uk) a learning disability organisation based in Seaford and Brighton.

    We support, care for and educate young people from all walks of life, aged 7-25, who have complex and severe learning disabilities and special needs. We currently support learners with autistic spectrum conditions, Downs Syndrome, Asperger’s Syndrome, severe communication difficulties and rare diagnoses.

    Essentially I wondered if your blog would be interested in helping to promote on of our upcoming projects, The Jumblies Project. We would of course help promote your blog too but it seemed like there is a good link up between our work.

    To give you some background, we are trying to raise money through Neighbourly, a sort of crowd funding website, to help our students put on an interactive, sensory performance of Edward Lear’s play The Jumblies that will be performed at the Brighton Fringe Festival and Brighton Digital Festival in 2017.

    I can provide more details about what is involved, how it will benefit our learners, links etc. but we would love your help getting the crowd funding link out there and provide you with some interesting content.
